Frequently asked questions
Can a project still be submitted today under the AFIR Energy Scheme for self-consumption?
No. The 2026 call window of the ENERGY state aid scheme ran from 15 June 2026 to 14 August 2026 and is closed. AFIR announced that, after evaluating the projects, it will consider whether to open a new call window, but as of 27 September 2026 it had not published a launch date.
How much funding can be obtained under the AFIR Energy Scheme?
The aid is 100% non-refundable: up to 650,000 euro/MW for installed capacity of up to and including 1 MW, and up to 550,000 euro/MW for capacity above 1 MW. A beneficiary may receive a maximum of 20 million euro in total.
What was the budget of the 2026 call window and how many projects were submitted?
The budget was 265 million euro: 145 million for capacity ≤1 MW and 120 million for capacity >1 MW. A total of 1,177 applications worth 400.86 million euro were submitted (1,107 under 1 MW and 70 over 1 MW), so demand exceeded the allocation.
Who can apply to the Energy Scheme for self-consumption?
Enterprises in the agricultural sector or the food industry, legally established and registered with the ONRC (Trade Register), as well as land improvement organisations, can apply. The investment must generate energy for activities carried out under the CAEN codes eligible for the scheme.
What types of investment does the scheme fund?
In the 2026 call window, the scheme funded only new solar electricity generation capacity for self-consumption, with or without storage installations, below or above 1 MW.
Can I submit more than one project?
Yes, but only if the investments relate to different consumption points and only within the ceiling of 20 million euro per beneficiary.
How long does it take to prepare the application?
It depends on the complexity of the project and the documents you already have. The first step is the eligibility analysis, which tells you what needs to be prepared.
What happens if I do not qualify?
We tell you before any contract is signed, and if another suitable programme exists, we point you to it.
