2026 Digitalisation Grants for SMEs in the Centre Region: How to Access Funding

The context of digitalisation funding for SMEs in the Centre Region

Preparing Romanian companies for the digital age is a strategic priority of the European Union, and to this end a new call window for grants dedicated to SMEs in the Centre Region will open in 2026. The project is part of the Centre Region Programme 2021-2027 and aims to support investments in the digital transformation of small and medium-sized companies in the six counties: Alba, Brașov, Covasna, Harghita, Mureș and Sibiu.

Funding ranges from 15,000 to 200,000 euro, a significant amount that allows both start-ups and established companies to adopt modern technologies, optimise their business processes and increase their competitiveness on domestic and international markets.

Who the eligible beneficiaries are and which projects can be funded

SMEs in the Centre Region, as officially defined by EU criteria (companies with a maximum of 250 employees and a turnover or total assets below the limits set by law), can access these grants. The scheme targets small and medium-sized enterprises from various sectors, especially industry, services, trade and IT, that wish to implement digital technologies such as:

  • automation of internal processes (ERP, CRM, management software);
  • digital equipment and state-of-the-art IT infrastructure;
  • e-commerce and digital marketing applications;
  • cybersecurity solutions;
  • integration of artificial intelligence and data analytics to optimise operations;
  • professional training in the digital field.

These grants can support both the purchase of technology and the costs associated with implementation and staff training.

Eligibility conditions and required documentation

To access funding, companies must meet clear criteria, including being registered in the Centre Region, operating legally on the market and not being in financial difficulty. The projects submitted must be technically and financially feasible, with a demonstrable impact on increasing digitalisation and productivity.

The standard documentation required for the application includes:

  • the funding application and the attached standard form;
  • the business plan or a detailed description of the project, with the proposed objectives and activities;
  • proof of SME status and of the registered office in the Centre Region;
  • proof of previous funding and of recent financial standing;
  • a technical and financial offer for the proposed purchases;
  • proof of settlements or previous purchases, if there are similar earlier projects;
  • other specific documents, such as tax clearance certificates and certificates confirming that obligations are paid up to date.

The impact of this funding on companies in the region

The implementation of these grants will accelerate the digitalisation of SMEs in the Centre Region, aiming to reduce the technological gap compared with competitors in other European countries and to develop an entrepreneurial ecosystem better suited to the 21st century. Digitalisation can attract new customers, make operations more efficient and reduce costs, but above all it can increase resilience in crisis situations, such as pandemics or disruptions in traditional supply chains.

Investment in digital technologies also facilitates exports and makes it possible to take part in foreign markets with higher requirements for innovation and digital transformation.

Preparing the application: essential steps and recommendations

Companies intending to apply should prepare thoroughly from now on, bearing in mind that a complete, coherent and well-founded application significantly increases the chances of success. The main recommendations are:

  • Internal analysis: Clearly assess your current digital needs and define the project's objectives.
  • Professional consultancy: Work with EU funding experts to prepare the application, avoid common mistakes and optimise the documentation.
  • Financial planning: Ensure the project's sustainability and identify any possible co-financing.
  • Compliance with deadlines and eligibility criteria: Monitor the official announcements and submit the application within the set deadlines.
  • Technical capacity: Select suppliers and technologies that are approved and compatible with national and European legislation.

Companies can benefit from free or paid consultancy, and rigorous preparation of the application can make the difference between "very high chances" and a rejection on administrative or technical grounds.

Given that investment in digitalisation is a necessary step towards sustainable growth, I recommend that all entrepreneurs begin planning and gathering documentation as soon as possible in order to make the most of the funding opportunities that will be available in 2026.
