ERC Consolidator Grant 2027: up to €2 million for researchers, deadline 12 January 2027

Who can apply

Principal investigators (PIs) of any age and nationality, wherever they live, can apply. They must have been awarded their first PhD (or an equivalent degree) between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2021 inclusive, i.e. 5–15 years before 1 January 2027. The period is extended for documented circumstances: maternity leave (18 months for each child), paternity or parental leave, long-term illness, national service, disability, clinical training (up to 4 years), major disasters, asylum or violence. The host institution can be any legal entity, public or private: a university, a research organisation or a company. It must be established in an EU Member State or an associated country. No consortia are required, and the host institution is the only participant. Anyone who has already received an ERC Consolidator Grant cannot apply. Each PI may submit only one eligible proposal to the main calls of the ERC 2027 work programme.

Frequently asked questions

What is the deadline for the ERC Consolidator Grant 2027?

The ERC-2027-CoG call opened on 24 September 2026. Proposals must be submitted by 12 January 2027, 17:00 (Brussels time), through the EU Funding & Tenders portal.

Who is eligible for the ERC Consolidator Grant 2027?

Researchers of any nationality who were awarded their first PhD between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2021 inclusive (5–15 years before 1 January 2027). The range is extended in documented situations: 18 months for each child in the case of maternity leave, parental leave, illness, clinical training of up to 4 years, and others.

How much is an ERC Consolidator Grant worth?

Up to €2 million for 5 years. A further €1 million at most can be requested for justified costs. Researchers moving to the EU or to an associated country from outside them can request up to €2 million in addition. The ERC reimburses 100% of direct costs and 25% as a flat rate for indirect costs.

What is the call budget and how many grants are awarded?

The ERC 2027 work programme provides an indicative budget of around €618 million for approximately 296 Consolidator grants. The final evaluation results are scheduled for 17 December 2027.

Can a company or a university from Romania be the host institution?

Yes. Any public or private legal entity established in an EU Member State, including universities, research institutes and companies, can host the PI. Public bodies, research organisations and higher education institutions must have a Gender Equality Plan.

Can I apply if I have already had an ERC grant?

Not if you have already had a Consolidator Grant. You can apply after a Starting Grant, but only if the ongoing project ends less than two years after the call deadline. Each PI may submit only one eligible proposal to the main ERC calls under the 2027 work programme.

How long does it take to prepare the application?

It depends on the complexity of the project and the documents you already have. The first step is the eligibility analysis, which tells you what needs to be prepared.

What happens if I do not qualify?

We tell you before any contract is signed, and if another suitable programme exists, we point you to it.
