A new boost for startups in the food industry
Easier access to funding and mentoring are two of the most keenly felt needs of Romanian entrepreneurs, especially in emerging sectors such as food. A recent initiative from the Food Angels Hub community responds to this need by offering a dedicated platform for early-stage startups in the food industry. Behind this effort are experienced entrepreneurs, such as Radu Savopol, founder of the 5 to go coffee shop chain, and Daniel Donici, founder of the dairy producer Artesana, who, together with eight other entrepreneurs, are organising a Pitching Day: a day of presentations dedicated to businesses in this field.
Who can take part and which types of startups are targeted
The main target group of this initiative is early-stage startups, meaning businesses at the start of their journey that have a validated idea, a prototype or products tested on a limited market, but need capital, know-how and connections in order to grow. The food industry, known for its rapid pace of innovation and competitiveness, thus gains a valuable opportunity for visibility and networking. This type of event is designed to give entrepreneurs the chance to present their solutions to a group of investors, experts and experienced sector leaders, which can speed up the development, validation and funding of the business.
The current context and funding opportunities for the food sector
The Romanian food industry is going through a dynamic phase of transformation, in which startups that bring innovation and sustainability are increasingly valued on both the local and international markets. Access to EU funds, national grants and private funding remains an essential pillar for the development of businesses in this sector. Although the legislative framework is favourable, many entrepreneurs struggle to identify suitable programmes and to complete their funding applications. Events such as Pitching Day therefore add value by offering not only the chance to attract investment, but also to connect startups with experts who can guide and optimise the process of accessing financial resources.
Documentation and preparation required to take part
Startups interested in applying must prepare thoroughly in order to win over the audience and investors. It is essential to have a clear, well-structured pitch covering elements such as the problem identified on the market, the proposed solution, competitive advantages, the business model, the marketing strategy and financial projections. Besides the presentation itself, they should have to hand documents that demonstrate the stage the business has reached: a business plan, prototypes, preliminary contracts with customers or partners, information about the team and existing capital. Knowledge of the legal framework on labelling, food safety and European compliance standards can also help build investors' confidence.
Practical recommendations for entrepreneurs who want to take part
Taking part in Pitching Day is an important step and, by extension, an opportunity that entrepreneurs should approach seriously. Besides preparing the materials technically, it is advisable to research the investors who will be present, to understand what they are looking for and how their objectives align with the startup's vision. You should also be ready to answer questions on growth potential, risks and use of funds clearly and concisely. Effective networking is another key element, so maintaining a professional and approachable attitude in the relationships that follow the event can make it easier to gain access to resources and long-term collaborations.
